Atom 8 and 9

All-New Atom #8
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Mike Norton and Andy Owens

This crazy series where ANYTHING can happen continues with this issue in which The Atom travels to a possible future where everything relates to Superheroes and Atom and the cut-in-half man, Dr. Hyatt, are being pursued by a pissed off a time cop. Wow, that is one crazy and fun issue.

All-New Atom #9
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Eddy Barrows and Trevor Scott

And the weirdness continues this issue even outside of Ivy Town. The Atom returns to Hong Kong to help out an old high school crush and he ends up in a fight with her dead husband, who she apparently murdered. The plots of this series are so cooooll and fun. I really think more people should be reading this book. If you want something completely unpredictable than All-New Atom is definitely for you. There is no way you can ever guess what is coming next. I liked the guest artists this issue, they were really good and I enjoyed learning a little bit more about Ryan's past. The villain Alvin is a total bastard but you wonder if Jia isn't all sweet and nice as she acts. This was a great issue.

No Enjoyment For No Reason

Action Comics #847
Written by Dwayne McDuffie
Art and Cover by Renato Guedes

We interrupt the regular run of Geoff Johns and Richard Donner (who are running late) with this little one-shot by Dwayne McDuffie. McDuffie writes a nice little story here and it is always nice to read a one-shot issue but something about this issue did not really resonate with me. It seemed dull sort of. While it was cool to see Sun Eaters and some interaction between Superman and the Kents, I just found myself bored with this issue. Maybe it was because I am annoyed that DC seems to change what Johnathan and Martha look like whenever they appear. Sometimes they look like they do on Smallville and other times they look like the oldest couple in the world. The art was fantastic, especially for a fill-in like this. But I just did not enjoy this for some odd reason. Not sure why.

Birds of Prey 103 and 104

Birds of Prey #103
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Nicola Scott and Doug Hazlewood

Overall, I have to say that the new status quo of the Birds of Prey is a lot of fun and is a refreshing change. I really do think it was the right time for Dinah to move on. This issue was action-packed and a lot of fun. Spy Smasher is certainly making Oracle's life a living hell. It was cool to see how she had a past with Barbara, you almost like Spy Smasher after reading this. I definitely recommend this issue.

Birds of Prey #104
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Nicola Scott and Doug Hazlewood

Wow, I did not expect the last page surprise of this issue! And I don't think anyone did. I am not going to spoil for you all, but definitely go out and buy this issue. It is one hell of a shocker. It was also really fun to see the Birds interact with the Secret Six. The six are a fun villain group and it is good to see them anywhere. I liked the mention of how the former JLI has taken some hits over the last few years and talk of Rocket Red. It makes a fan boy like me smile. Simone is fantastic writer if I haven't already said that enough. This was a hell of an issue.

Brave and the Bold 1 and 2

Brave and the Bold #1
Written by Mark Waid
Art by George Pérez and Bob Wiacek

This is the first issue of DC's new team-up book (inspired by the old Brave and the Bold book from the sixties, seventies, and eighties) and Mark Waid proves right off the bat that this is going to be the most fun and most exciting book that DC puts out each month. He really hit it out of the park. Batman and Green Lantern may not have been my pick for the book's first team-up but I would be wrong, because Waid shows how great these two work together. The fight in the batcave was sensational, seeing that big penny finally being used almost brought tears to my eyes....well, I wouldn't go that far but it was cool. The idea of the book of destiny getting into the wrong hands is cool and I am shocked nobody has thought of this before. Great start for a great series.

Brave and the Bold #2
Written by Mark Waid
Art by George Pérez and Bob Wiace

Okay when I saw that Green Lantern and Supergirl this issue I was thinking okay well Supergirl is a little overexposed. But Waid pulls it off perfectly, I mean he writes her great over in Legion and here he writes her perfectly as well. She is an intelligent yet a little nutty girl. I loved the moment where she dresses up in a little girl costume to fool the spectators. And did I mention that a Las Vegas-like gambling planet is one of the coolest ideas ever. I am just ga-ga over the series. I love it!

Robin 159 and 160

Robin #159
Written by Adam Beechen
Art by Freddie Williams II

While it doesn't make any sense for the girl on the cover to be white and blond instead of looking like Zoanne, this was certainly a lot of fun. I loved how Robin goes out on his first date with Zoanne yet super-villains still manage to find him. The moments with Batman were of course also superb. Highly recommended.

Robin #160
Written by Adam Beechen
Art by Freddie Williams II

The idea of a metahuman drug-induced street gang is actually not new at all to comics. It has been done a few times before. But Beechen probably does it better than any other writer here. He really shows Tim Drake's amazing detective skills and sort of pulls the reader along for the ride with Tim. The art is good, I love how there are so many scenes of Robin interrogating this issue. That is always fun, especially to see Robin perched on something!

Wonder Woman 4 and 5

Wonder Woman (Volume 3) #4
Written by Allan Heinberg
Art and Cover by Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson

Okay so yes this was a good issue. It just was definitely not worth the long ass wait. Heinberg has proven with this book that he is just not up to the task of being a monthly comic book writer. This was just too long of a delay and this story isn't going to be finished for a while because of him. Anyways, the art was gorgeous and the story is still compelling. Circe has one badass Wonder Woman costume but by the end of this issue you really get the feeling that Diana deserves to be the one true Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman (Volume 3) #5
Written by Will Pfeifer
Art by Jean Diaz, Geraldo Borges and Wellington Diaz

Pfeifer writes a spectacular little fill-in this issue. It is a heartwarming story showing how Wonder Woman inspires Women all over the DCU to stand up for their rights and not let themselves get abused. Pfeifer would make a great regualar writer of this title if he was given the chance. This was a real good issue. Reminds me of Rucka's run sort of.

Aquman 48 and 49

Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #48
Written by Kurt Busiek
Art by Phil Winslade and Butch Guice

Busiek's penultimate issue is probably his best yet. We get to see what the Fisherman has been up to in the missing year as well as explore some of the new Aquaman's past. And the best part of all, a map of the Atlantic Ocean without the water. Very Very cool. The Oceanscape is really another world. A world within a world and I am surprised that no one has thought of taking Aquaman in this direction before.

Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis #49
Written by Kurt Busiek
Art by Ricardo Villagran

This issue is Busiek's last on the title. Next month a new creative team starts. Busiek's run was pretty good, not perfect, but pretty good now that I look back on it. I am excited to see what Tad Williams will do with this title. This issue focuses exclusively on the fight between the New Aquaman and the Fisherman. Busiek really makes the Fisherman into a lot less of a lame villain now that we know he is a parasitic alien creature that attached himself to people. Very Starro-like but very cool.

Batman Says No To The (Sinestro) Corps

Green Lantern (Volume 4) #17
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert

While this issue seemed very short for some reason, it was really good. We finally have an explanation for what John Stewart has been up to and he actually plays a pivotal role in this issue. Not to mention, a nice flashback of Kyle Rayner. It looks like Johns is finally realizing that he hasn't utilized the other Green Lanterns to the best of his ability since Rebirth. Abin Sur's son is a bastard but you can't help but feel happy for him when he gets chosen to be a member of the Sinestro Corps. I am excited about seeing this new corps in action. Hal really didn't respect Abin Sur that much if you think about it. He probably should have returned that body a long time ago. Although, Abin didn't even know he was a father so I don't know if the changing of his headstone to read ....and father.... is exactly justified but oh well. Definitely a solid issue. Oh and I gotta love Batman getting asked to be a member of the Sinestro Corps.

Worth The Wait, But Next Time Don't Be Late

Action Comics #846
Written by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner
Art and Cover by Adam Kubert

Well, a lot of stuff happens here. Not to mention of course Superman being thrown into the Phantom Zone. Even though this isn't exactly an original plot, I mean it has been done in Superman II and on Smallville. This is really the first time it has occured in the comics and that is what makes it so damn excting. I am really starting to get why so many people love Zod as a villain. Lois's comments about Batman and Wonder Woman were really funny too. It was kind of sick to see Ursa breaking Lois's arm though. Johns and Donner really made this worth the wait. I just hope future issues are not as late as this one.
